Effect of energy losses and interactions during diffusive shock acceleration: applications to SNR, AGN and UHE Cosmic Rays
نویسنده
چکیده
I discuss the shape of the high energy end of the spectrum of particles arising from diffusive shock acceleration in the presence of (i) additional diffusive escape from the accelerator, (ii) continuous energy losses, (iii) energy changes arising from interactions. The form of the spectrum near cut-off is sensitive to these processes as well as to the momentum-dependence of the diffusion coefficients and the compression ratio, and so the spectrum of any radiation emitted by the accelerated particles may reflect the physical conditions of the acceleration region. Results presented in this paper have applications in interpreting the spectral energy distributions of many types of astrophysical object including supernova remnants (SNR), active galactic nuclei (AGN) and acceleration sources of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHE CR). Except for extremely nearby sources, spectral features imprinted on the spectrum of UHE CR during the acceleration process will be largely eroded during propagation, but the spectrum of UHE neutrinos produced in interactions of UHE CR with radiation, both during cosmic ray acceleration and subsequent propagation through the cosmic microwave background radiation, contains sufficient information to determine the cut-off momentum of the UHE CR just after acceleration for reasonable assumptions. Observation of these UHE neutrinos by the Pierre Auger Observatory may help in identifying the sources of the highest energy cosmic rays. PACS Numbers: 98.70.Sa, 95.85.Ry, 98.38.Mz, 98.54.Gr

Acceleration of UHE Cosmic Rays in Gamma-Ray Bursts
Gamma-Ray Bursts are good candidates of the “bottom up” scenario for the generation of the UHE Cosmic Rays. In the most discussed model of GRBs, namely the “fireball” model, a highly relativistic shock forms and seems capable of accelerating the cosmic rays up to the EeV range. However, only the first Fermi cycle produces a large energy gain to particles coming from the external medium. Thus, a...
متن کاملUltra high energy cosmic rays: subluminal and superluminal shocks
Diffusive shock acceleration is invoked to explain non-thermal particle acceleration in Supernova Remnants, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) Jets, Gamma ray Bursts (GRBs) and various large scale cosmic structures. The importance of achieving the highest observed particle energies by such a mechanism in a given astrophysical situation is a recurring theme. In this work, shock acceleration in relativ...
متن کاملAnomalous transport and particle acceleration at shocks
The theory of first order Fermi acceleration at shocks assumes that particles diffuse due to scattering off slow-moving magnetic irregularities. However, cosmic rays are closely tied to magnetic field lines, and the transport process, particularly across the direction of the field, is likely to be more complicated. To describe cross field transport we employ recent extensions of the Rechester-R...
متن کاملInteractions of UHE cosmic ray nuclei with radiation during acceleration: consequences for the spectrum and composition
In this paper, we study the diffusive shock acceleration of cosmic-ray protons and nuclei, taking all the relevant interaction processes with photon backgrounds into account. We investigate how the competition between protons and nuclei is modified by such acceleration parameters as the acceleration rate, its rigidity dependence, the photon density, and the confinement capability of the sources...
متن کاملAcceleration of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays
Some general features of cosmic ray acceleration are summarized along with some inferences that can be drawn concerning the origin of the UHE component. The UHE luminosity density is found to be similar to that derived for GeV cosmic rays and its slope suggests a distinct origin. Reports of clustering on small angular scale, if confirmed, would rule out most proposed source models. More general...
